About The Instructor

John Burgess is an attorney and CPA with Jackson Lewis in Tampa who helps business owners, executives, and other senior managers with all of their employee benefits. He advises employee benefit plan committees, including 401(k) plan committees, on their fiduciary responsibilities and best practices. He has worked with plans of all sizes, ranging from those sponsored by small, local companies with a few dozen participants to large, multi-national corporations with over 10,000 participants and billions in plan assets.

John is one of Florida's leading experts on employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) who has helped numerous companies throughout the United States establish and maintain these plans. He also helps employers, from startups to public companies, establish non-qualified and equity-based compensation programs for their executives and key employees. He has significant experience in guiding employers in understanding, choosing and implementing the program that works best for them, including deferred compensation, profits interests, restricted stock, stock options, restricted stock units and stock appreciation rights.  

John is the President of the Florida West Coast Employee Benefits Council for its 2022-23 season, a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Center for Employee Ownership, the chair of the FICPA's 2023 Employee Benefits Conference, and the Executive Event Chair for the Sarasota Walk to End Alzheimer's.
