As Hurricane Isaias approaches the Florida Panhandle, we recognize the challenges this storm may present, particularly with the Oct. 15 federal tax filing deadline just one week away.
On Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 25 counties in the Panhandle in anticipation of the storm.
As in the past, a major disaster declaration from the President of United States would trigger an automatic extension of the filing deadline.
But unlike in the past, thanks to the Filing Relief for Natural Disasters Act enacted in July 2025, state governors may now also formally request federal tax filing relief from the United States Treasury following a state-declared disaster.
The FICPA has been in communication with both state and federal officials regarding the approaching deadline and the potential need for relief.
While we have no official announcement to share at this time, we want to assure our members that we are advocating on your behalf, and the appropriate steps are being taken. As such, we respectfully ask that you not contact state lawmakers or officials with respect to a potential extension. Trust us: We have your back.
Unless an extension is officially announced by the IRS, members and their clients should continue to operate under the existing Oct. 15 filing deadline.
The FICPA will continue monitoring developments and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
Stay safe this weekend, and know that we will be advocating for you before, during and after the storm.
