Advocacy Alert: Gov. DeSantis announces filing extension 'will happen'

October 13, 2026

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday announced at a press conference in Jay that he is working with the federal government to secure tax-filing relief for those impacted by Hurricane Isaias ahead of the Oct. 15 deadline.

“We’re going to do it,” the governor said. “The feds will validate it. … Likely it will be, whoever is in the state of emergency will be able to get an extension on those tax-filing deadlines. That will happen. I approved that today. … So people can count that that’s going to happen.”

The FICPA has been working around the clock with state and federal officials since Friday to secure this needed relief. We thank Gov. DeSantis, state officials and state lawmakers for working with us on behalf of our members and their clients.

As pleased as we are to hear that relief is on the way, please be advised: Until the Internal Revenue Service officially announces an extension and names specific counties, members and their clients should continue to work toward the Thursday, Oct. 15, deadline.

We will update our members with official communications from the Executive Office of the Governor, the White House, FEMA and the IRS as they become available.
