Unrelated Business Taxable Income (UBTI): Application to Not-for-Profit/Tax-Exempt Organizations

This session will provide the attendee with an understanding on the ways that a not-for-profit/tax exempt organization could be subject to federal and possibly state corporate income tax from engaging in activities that are unrelated to the organiziation's tax-exempt mission.

Current Expected Credit Losses for Not-for-Profit Organizations

At the end of this presentation participants will be able to: 
* Identify the provisions of ASU 2016-13 and evaluate how they relate to NFPs 
* Evaluate their implementation (or implement them if in industry)
* Prepare appropriate disclosures

ASU 2016-13, Financial Instruments - Measurement of Credit Losses on Financial Instruments (ASC 326) was issued approximately six years ago.  It, like the revenue recognition and lease standards, was deferred due to standards overload. Not-for-profits will implement this standard for years beginning after December 31, 2022.

The standard, which is often erroneously thought to only affect financial institutions, stresses that financial assets have credit risk throughout the holding period and that risk is present at origination.  Not-for-profits will find that accounts receivable, guarantees of financial obligations of others, programmatic loans and other notes receivable are the accounts most likely to be affected by this standard. This presentation will discussion implementation and disclosures that will be important to not-for-profits.
