Erik Halluska, Partner – Withum
As we continue to evolve into a remote working industry, practices have evolved as well. Practices that were once thought of as irrelevant, are now the norm and some that were considered foundational have become obsolete. In this session, we will highlight some of the areas and discuss what has worked well, what hasn't worked, and which areas of remote auditing the industry can improve on.
2:50pm - 3:40pm Is an ESOP Right for You or Your Clients? (1 AA)
John Burgess, CPA, Esq., Partner – Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP
Over 200,000 businesses in Florida are owned by those age 55 and up. Those owners will eventually exit their businesses, the question is how. This session will describe the basics of an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), which is a highly flexible exit strategy that could work for many of these owners. We will discuss the basics of how ESOPs are formed and how they work, the characteristics of a company that might be a good ESOP candidate, the tax advantages that are available for both selling owners and ESOP companies, and how employees benefit from participating in an ESOP. Finally, we will go through an example of a typical ESOP transaction.
3:40pm - 4:30pm Lease Standards ASC 842-A Practical Approach (1AA)
Al Erdman, Partner – Withum
This session will look at some actual applications of the new lease standard to better understand its requirements and offer insights on compliance. It will also touch on its impact on deferred income taxes.
