Mission Statement: Mission: Empowering Hispanics and other members of the community to become self-sufficient and lead productive lives. Hispanic Unity was originally founded 27 years ago by community leaders to ease the acculturation transition for newcomers from other nations. Today this nonprofit provides 25 programs, in four languages, to Broward’s diverse community. Hispanic Unity remains the county’s largest agency dedicated to the immigrant population providing them with the tools they need to build a new life. In 2008, the agency served 25,000 clients throughout our eight Broward County sites. HUF’s programs help clients of all ages – infants through seniors - in critically important areas: employment skills/ placement, English classes, health education and services, nutrition program, and financial and emergency assistance, licensed preschool center, immigration and legal assistance, seniors program, parenting and financial education, free tax preparation and HIV/AIDS prevention and testing.

Briefly describe the CPAs role as a board member and any other expectations or comments: Volunteers can serve either at the board of director level and/or as part of one of two committees. The Finance Commitee is made up of six external volunteers and/or board members from bankers to attorneys. The agency's CFO, Accounting Manager, CEO and Chief Program and Chief Fund Development Officers also particiate. The Finance Committee reviews monthly financial statements, reviews/approves agency policies, reviews/approves all contracts and new programs/ventures. A sub-committee of this group also reviews pro formas for each of the organization's programs. The Finance Committee meets 11x per year. The Audit Committee meets 2-3x per year and helps to select the agency's external auditing firm as well as, review the organization's annual external audit. Accountants may also particiate in the agency's other committees such as strategic planning, facilities and even fund development.
