John M. Williams, CPA

John Michael Williams, C.P.A. Partner Purvis, Gray and Company, LLP John Michael Williams currently serves as Chair of the Tax Department of Purvis, Gray & Company, LLP. He began as a junior staff member of the firm in 1977 and was asked to join the partnership ten years later. Although he remains in the current headquarters in Gainesville, Florida, he serves clients throughout state and country through the firm’s offices in Ocala, Sarasota and Tallahassee. He began his accounting career as an auditor working primarily on governmental and not-for-profit clients. Several years of this work led him to become interested in tax matters peculiar to not-for-profit entities and then taxation in general. Other than not-for-profit organizations, clients served include a number of financial institutions, wholesalers and distributors, contractors, and real estate developers. In recent years, he has worked extensively with not-for-profit clients regarding the use of complex tax structures involving taxable subsidiaries and disregarded entities. Over the last three years he has been following closely the IRS’s implementation of the revised Form 990. Over the last year he has assisted many organizations prepare for their initial use of that form while studying the plethora of tax legislation enacted during the same twelve months. Mr. Williams has spoken to numerous groups regarding not-for-profit organizations and the compliance aspects of those organizations reports to federal and state authorities. Mr. Williams is a member of the Tax Division of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and is a past president and current member of the North Central Florida Estate Planning Council. He has served numerous not-for-profit entities either as a board member or pro bono advisor. His current community service includes serving as a member of the Board of Trustees of the FICPA Educational Foundation, Inc. and as member of the Pension Advisory Committee of the City of Gainesville, Florida.
