  • An overview of Sales and Use tax
  • Common audit problems (such as use tax from online purchases, non-remittance of commercial rental tax between related entities)
  • A general overview of the audit protest process and how to get "binding rulings" from the DOR via the TAA process, and hit the latest cases.
  • Reviewing newer cases dealing with nexus in sales and use tax and the equitable ownership doctrine in ad valorem property tax.

    Steven M. Hogan is a shareholder with the Ausley McMullen law firm in Tallahassee, Florida. ( His tax practice focuses on state and federal tax controversy and planning. Mr. Hogan serves as Director of The Florida Bar Tax Section's State Tax Division, and as an adjunct professor at the Florida State University College of Law. Mr. Hogan authors a monthly column in State Tax Notes focusing on Florida tax law. He co-authored the 2017 Bloomberg/BNA Florida Corporate Income Tax Navigator. Mr. Hogan is also the creator and host of the Tax Law Today podcast (
