The Emerging Leaders Summit brings together young CPAs (35 and under) from all across the state for a two-day experience that focuses on the future of the CPA profession in Florida and enhancing their leadership skills.
 
Attendees will be welcomed to Tallahassee by the FICPA President/CEO and hear about the current state of the profession. During the day, you will have the opportunity to engage state lawmakers on the issues impacting the profession, attend legislative committee meetings, and tour the beautiful state Capitol.
 
Several of the CPAs serving in the legislature will also meet with the group to discuss the profession and what they have experienced as leaders within their communities.
 
On an adjoining day, you’ll get to spend time with other young CPAs developing your leadership skills in a full day seminar with Dan Griffiths, CPA, CGMA, certified in Strategic Planning Facilitation and Leadership Development through the Business Learning Institute. In the past, he has covered such topics as how to adapt to and capitalize on the profession’s shifts and how to improve your busy season.
 
This leadership seminar qualifies for 8 Behavioral CPE credits.

Intentional Career Design 
 
It can be easy to find ourselves on the career conveyor belt. Get accepted into a good university. Get good grades. Get accepted into the business school. Get more good grades. Get accepted into the accounting program or graduate school. Get more good grades. Get a job at a reputable firm. Distinguish yourself as a new staff. Get promoted to senior. And so it goes.
 
This hands-on workshop will provide you with an opportunity to step back and focus on what you really want out of life and how to build a career that supports those goals. Instead of just letting your career happen to you, this session will give you tools and a simple process to help you play a proactive role in architecting the career you want.
 
Leadership in the Profession
 
Most of us are not going to be thrust into a leadership role with lots of responsibility early in our careers.  It can take time to build the connections and credibility for that to happen.  Here's a secret: The CPA profession is your shortcut.  This is about more than just passing an exam and "getting your CPA" to slap on your resume.  
 
In this session we'll discuss how to leverage involvement in the profession and our professional associations to build leadership skills, network connections, and credibility all at once.  We will help you determine how to get involved and make an impact on your career and community.
 

Your Leadership Brand
 
A brand is something that you have whether you are intentional about it or not.  It's what other people think about when they think of you.  What is your unique leadership brand and what can you do to enhance it? In this session, we'll help you develop a deeper understanding of what influences your leadership brand and how to be intentional in shaping it.
 
Conflict Management
 
Effectively managing conflict is near the top of the list of critical skills of effective leaders.  Most of us just don't know how to do this.  We either avoid the conflict or dive right into the fray damaging our relationships and reputation along the way.  In this session, you'll learn about your default conflict mode and how to use an understanding of those natural tendencies to develop more skill in dealing with conflict in a healthy way.
 
 
Moving from Compliance to Consultant
 
As CPAs, we like to tell ourselves that we are trusted advisers to our clients. However, the onslaught of compliance work and deadlines can often mean that any "advising" we do ends up being more limited than we care to admit. Worse, we tend to get paid for all of the compliance and we chalk up our time advising to "client development." In this session, we'll discuss how to position yourself as more of an adviser, both within your firm and with clients. You'll learn how to change your workflow and pricing model to build in more of an advisory focus and ensure you get paid for all of the consulting you are already doing.
 
How to Sell . . . Without Feeling Like a Salesperson. 
 
CPAs don’t like selling.  In fact, they don’t even like to use the word “sell” when describing business development activities.  If we had wanted to be salespeople, we probably would have taken a different career path. However, to be truly successful in our profession, both in public accounting and industry, sales skills are a must.  In this session, we’ll show you how even young CPAs can generate leads, build a network, and close sales; all without feeling like a salesperson.
