Objectives:
Provide an understanding of unusual and unique accounting, tax and operational issues for churches and other religious organizations including the impact of SSARS 21.

Major Topics:

The major topics of this course include:

  • Issues dealing with GAAP and OCBOA in Religious Organizations explained and discussed including SSARS 21.
  • Issues include compilation, review and audit problems of Religious Organizations
  • Question of “What is a religious organization?” will be addressed
  • Important concerns about interim financial reporting, fraud, internal controls and budgeting in religious organizations are explained in detail and will include examples
  • Who is considered a minister?
  • Unique problems of clergy, payroll and tax matters will be presented with examples for correct handling of these matters
  • New matters involving the tests for employee vs independent contractors will be examined
  • Unusual tax issues of employee vs independent contractors in the church will be discussed as well as issues relating to taxable and tax- exempt activities
  • Ongoing Internal Control matters for Religious Organizations will be discussed
