Debate on Amendment 5 to tour the state
We need your help: Senator Mike Haridopolos, R-Melbourne and his group Protect Florida’s Future are holding statewide forums to educate voters on Amendment 5 and the negative effects it will have on the state if passed in November. The FICPA along with other members of the Coalition to Protect Florida’s Economy have been asked to help increase turnout at the forums.
For nearly 8 years the Coalition to Protect Florida’s Economy – a group of more than 20 Florida organizations representing diverse areas of our state – has successfully defeated three proposed amendments to Florida’s Constitution that would have drastically turned Florida’s tax structure on its head. The Coalition’s members collectively oppose any effort to create a services tax in Florida. A services tax is not a tax on business or the wealthy – it is a tax on individuals who choose to utilize any service.

Key talking points on Amendment 5
If you plan to attend these debates, you will likely see both print and TV media coverage in the room. In the event you are approached by a member of the press or would like to comment on why the FICPA is opposed to Amendment 5, we encourage you to focus on the following key points:
1) Negative impact Amendment 5 will have on Florida’s educational system;
2) Economic instability and uncertainty that Amendment 5 will create;
3) Potential for the creation of a services tax to fill the $9.5 to $11 billion revenue hole created by Amendment 5; and
4) Voters should be informed that Amendment 5 is not pure property tax relief…..it’s simply swapping one tax for another; and
5) We believe that Amendment 5 opens the door to a tax on professional services.
