CORAL GABLES – Miami-Dade County resident, Maria Figueroa Byrd, has been elected President of the Junior League of Miami (JLM) for the 2014-2015 year. Commencing in May, Byrd will serve as JLM's 88th president. JLM is a non-profit organization of almost 1,000 women dedicated to improving the Miami-Dade community. The mission of JLM is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

"I look forward to continuing the mission of JLM," says Byrd. "We are proud to be an organization that is run by volunteers, provides trained volunteers to the community, and invests its fundraising dollars directly into the community projects we support. In 2014-2015, we will be supporting nine community projects which focus on families at risk with an emphasis on Domestic Violence."

Byrd, a native of Colombia, is a graduate of Miami Dade College and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Florida International University. She is licensed as a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida. As an active member of JLM since 2001, she has held numerous leadership positions at the council and board of director levels and has actively been involved in one of JLM's flagship projects, Inn Transition North, a transitional housing facility in North Miami.

Byrd is a partner at Byrd Martinez CPA. Prior to founding Byrd Martinez CPA, Byrd was the Director of Finance at a recycled paper manufacturing company. She started her career at Grant Thornton LLP, an international public accounting firm, where she spent 11 years and reached the level of Senior Manager.

As president of JLM, Byrd will preside over board meetings, general membership meetings and board trainings. Byrd will also represent JLM at the Association of Junior Leagues International conferences.
