Trump Weighs Breaking Up Wall Street Banks, Raising Gas Tax

By Jennifer Jacobs and Margaret Talev
Bloomberg
bloomberg.com

President Donald Trump said he’s actively considering a breakup of giant Wall Street banks, giving a push to efforts to revive a Depression-era law separating consumer and investment banking.

Trump also said he’s open to increasing the U.S. gas tax to fund infrastructure development, in a further sign that policies unpopular with the Republican establishment are under consideration in the White House. He described higher gas taxes as acceptable to truckers – “I have one friend who’s a big trucker,” he said – as long as the proceeds are dedicated to improving U.S. highways.

journalofaccountancy.com

Today’s audit profession is driving exciting and unprecedented changes that are fundamentally evolving the role of the auditor and how audits are performed.

Breakthrough innovations in areas such as artificial intelligence, workflow automation and data analytics are eliminating a number of the tedious and labor-intensive manual processes traditionally associated with an audit. More importantly, innovation is enabling auditors to deliver powerful insights that simply weren’t possible before. These changes can enhance audit quality and deliver higher value for audit stakeholders – from clients and audit professionals to investors and the capital markets as a whole.

How Accounting Can Empower Better Project Management

By Donny Shimamoto, CPA/CITP, CGMA
CGMA Magazine
cgma.org

Accountants are a natural ally for anyone hoping to get things done within an organization. They know the transaction flows of the organization and the risks and controls around its processes, and that knowledge can provide a valuable road map for those tasked with product design, process improvement, and more.

To maximize their utility, accountants need to speak one of the most important languages of modern business. They need to understand project management, the methodology by which many business leaders enact business improvements and technology innovation.

Accountants who learn the flow and terminology of project work are better able to serve as business partners for teams outside of finance, and they’ll be better positioned to advocate for good financial, data, and process management practices.

In short, those in finance who understand project management will be seen more like enablers and less like gatekeepers.

9 Ways to Be Indispensable That Never Appear on Performance Appraisals

By Jeff Haden
Contributing editor, Inc.
inc.com

Nearly every performance appraisal evaluates qualities like teamwork, attention to detail, dependability, creativity, leadership – those skills and attributes are basically a given. Every solid employee possesses those important – and relatively easy to define – qualities.

Yet some employees are even more valuable – not just exceptional, they're indispensable. They possess attributes that aren't found on performance appraisals but nonetheless make a huge impact on the people around them, and especially on a company's results.

Mentor a Student at Mega

Are you interested in making a difference in a student’s desire to become a CPA? The Accounting Careers Committee has selected 20 outstanding accounting majors to attend the Accounting Scholars Leadership Symposium at the Mega CPE Conference. There, they’ll have the opportunity to learn more about the accounting profession from practicing CPAs.

Adopt-A-Student is a way for members to personally contribute to a student’s journey by making a donation or mentoring a student. We’re searching for members attending the Mega Conference to mentor a student during lunch on Thursday, June 15. These students would greatly benefit from your time and attention.

Here’s what some of the student attendees said last year:

  • “It was great to be able to have a conversation, and to ask the questions I might otherwise be scared to ask.”
  • “I liked listening to his past and current professional experiences as a CPA.”
  • “The encouragement from a practicing CPA helped push me toward my goals.”
  • “My mentor was very open about his accounting path and his career transitions. He provided a different perspective of tax and offered a lot of encouragement and support in my career choice.”

If you like the idea of mentoring a student, contact Jennifer Allen at allenj@ficpa.org for more information and to sign up.

If you won’t have the opportunity to mentor a student but would like to make a donation, select Adopt-A-Student when registering for the Mega CPE Conference and select the amount you’d like to give. The costs for students from throughout Florida to attend an overnight program are substantial.

Join us by encouraging our students to see a future in accounting and help them believe they can obtain it. Embark on this journey with our leaders of tomorrow, today.
