TaxWatch Announces Graduates of Florida Citizenship Institute

The Florida TaxWatch Center for Florida Citizenship recently announced the graduates of the second class of the Florida Citizenship Institute. Among them are three FICPA members – Herman Castro, a student member from the University of Florida; Camila Cote of Ernst & Young in Miami; and Chris Howell of Thomas Howell Ferguson, P.A. in Tallahassee. Also in the graduating class was FICPA Director of Governmental Affairs Justin Thames.

“We’re so pleased that three of our members, as well as one of our staff members, are among the distinguished graduates of this key Institute,” said FICPA President/CEO Deborah Curry, CPA, CGMA. “We congratulate them on taking the initiative to seek this information and, as an organization with a staff-member graduate, look forward to benefitting from the knowledge.”

The Florida Citizenship Institute provides up-and-coming business professionals with the knowledge about how government policy and regulation can impact their businesses, and how they can better understand how government operates. Students heard from some of Florida’s most influential policymakers, agency heads, and economic leaders, including Gov. Bob Martinez, former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker and former Florida Lottery Secretary David Griffin.

Estate Planning for Blended Families

By Craig W. Smalley
The Tax Adviser

The chance that a marriage entered in the United States this year will end in divorce is about 50 percent. In 2013, 40 percent of marriages included at least one spouse who previously was married. As a result, a tremendous number of blended families exist in the United States today (a blended family is defined as a family that includes children from a previous marriage of one spouse or both). Estate planning for these individuals is much more complicated than it is for any other group.

One of the biggest challenges is that most people who remarry already have kids. Frequently, both spouses in a second marriage want some or all of the assets they bring into the marriage to go to their biological children, rather than their stepchildren, upon their death. However, they also frequently wish the surviving spouse to have use of the assets or to receive the income from the assets until the surviving spouse dies. The easiest and fairest way to achieve this is with either an AB trust or an ABC trust.

Retreat to the Florida Keys
Book your stay by June 30!

Join us in Key Largo for the Family Retreat and Golf Tournament in July. CPAs and their families will be gathering at the exclusive, remote and dazzling Ocean Reef Resort July 27-30.

“There isn’t another event like it,” said Retreat Co-Chair George Gulisano. “CPAs and their families are so time-starved these days. The Retreat is a relaxing getaway focused on family, friends, storytelling, great food and a little golf, all for a good cause” Gulisano said.

Just 45 minutes from Miami, the Retreat is convenient, yet off the beaten path.

“You’ll find kids running on the beach, families gathering at the pool for dive-in movies and everyone celebrating summer together at the beach barbecue and moonlight luau,” explained Retreat Co-Chair Jason Chorlins. “The property is amazing – five-star accommodations, three championship golf courses, a Har-Tru tennis facility, a marina and much more.”

The July 28 golf tournament, sponsored by HSBC Bank, is an 18-hole, four-person golf scramble – each player hits a shot and the best shot is selected until the ball is holed. This allows golfers of all skill levels to enjoy the game. Proceeds from the Retreat and Tournament support scholarships for Florida accounting students.

In its ninth year, the Retreat strikes the perfect balance between private family time and group festivities designed to promote the CPA profession and encourage attendees to get to know each other.

“The Educational Foundation is committed to making this extraordinary Retreat affordable, and at $195 per night (with kids staying free in their parents’ room), we believe we’ve succeeded,” Chorlins said.
