CFO Atwater Encourages Floridians to Prepare for Hurricane Season

Dollars & Sense
Florida Department of Financial Services

It goes without saying that June 1 has a special meaning to Floridians: the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Last fall, Florida’s 10-year hurricane-free streak was broken as Hurricane Hermine made landfall near the coast of St. Marks. About one month later, Hurricane Matthew made landfall over Haiti as a Category 4 hurricane, later embarking on a three-day journey up Florida’s east coast and into Georgia and the Carolinas, causing damage that exceeded $729 million and generated 112,000 insurance claims. In total, Floridians last year filed nearly 130,000 insurance claims totaling roughly $800 million in losses.

The question now is: If a storm were to reach Florida’s shores next week, would you be prepared?

How to Create a More Focused Practice

By Brannon Poe, CPA
Journal of Accountancy
journalofaccountancy.com

In much the same way as our homes do, CPA firms can become cluttered. Firms try to offer more service lines than they can handle. Not only is this not optimal for your clients, it can create unnecessary risk to your practice, and you can leave money on the table by not focusing.

Becoming a jack of all trades is a common pitfall. All too often in public practice, well-meaning owners try to be too many things to too many people. The two main reasons are:

  • Clients ask for a service a firm does not currently provide. The owner realizes there likely is demand for that service and adds it. The service may be something fairly straightforward: payroll, for example. And, if it were just payroll, it wouldn't be a problem. But owners have a tendency to keep adding services until they – and indeed, their practices – go off message.
  • Vendors encourage owners to diversify to capture new profit centers, persuading them with the allure of a new profit center and the misguided belief that a CPA practice should be a “one-stop shop.”
