Prepare for the New Standards in PFP

The AICPA’s Statement on Standards in Personal Financial Planning Services (SSPFPS No. 1) was issued to provide authoritative guidance and establish enforceable standards for members practicing in PFP. SSPFPS No. 1 was issued in January 2014 and is effective beginning July 1, 2014.

All AICPA members are required to follow a rigorous Code of Professional Conduct requiring that they act with integrity, objectivity, due care and competence; fully disclose any conflicts of interest (and obtain client consent if a conflict exists); maintain client confidentiality; disclose to the client any commission or referral fees; and serve the public interest when providing financial services.

DBPR Promotes CPAs in Florida Trend

The April 2014 issue of Florida Trend includes a Sponsored Report, Beyond Taxes, from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). The attractive, two-page article promotes the importance of using CPAs and the value of the profession. DBPR subsidized the piece through its Unlicensed Activity (ULA) Campaign, which is funded through a portion of Florida CPAs’ license fees.

“We’re so pleased with the publication of the Florida Trend report,” said FICPA President/CEO Deborah Curry. “Increasing public awareness about the prestige of the CPA credential is a key element in our efforts to help ensure our members’ success.”

Senate Bill 1500, passed during the 2013 Legislative Session, mandates that a portion of CPA licensure fees be used to fund the DBPR’s Unlicensed Activity Campaign. DBPR and the FICPA collaborate on the campaign.

Tech Tip
Microsoft Updating XP Security Essentials for a Limited Time

groovypost.com

Microsoft recently ended support for Windows XP, but still will provide updates for Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) for a limited time. This will give XP users a bit more time to keep their computer secure until they decide their options for moving on.

Security Essential Updates of XP
If you don’t already have MSE installed, the company has stopped providing it as a download. If you have it installed, you’re in luck – at least for a little while. According to an article on the MSDN blog:

If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer provide security updates to help protect your PC.

Microsoft was vague about exactly how long it will provide antimalware updates to MSE. But don’t expect them to keep coming for very long.

Also, keep in mind that April 8 was Patch Tuesday. This is your chance to get your final security patches for the 12-year-old operating system. Microsoft also is ending support for Office 2003, so make sure you grab those updates as well.
