FICPA's 86th Chair Ken Strauss received his Bachelors Degree from Boston University in 1975 and his Masters in Tax from Florida International University in 1981. Ken has lectured extensively to professional groups and clients, and has published many articles in professional journals and commercial publications. The Tax Advisor voted Strauss's article on "Fiscal Year Non-Conformity" as Best Article of the Year. The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, New York Times and the Miami Herald frequently quote Ken as an expert regarding various tax issues.

Ken is also a co-author of the Disaster Area Practice Guide, which was published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as an industry guideline. He has been frequently selected as one of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants' Outstanding Discussion Leaders, and is a former Regional Vice President for the Southern region. He has served on the FICPA Educational Foundation Board of Trustees since 1996. A member of the AICPA governing Council, Ken also is serving his 13th term on the FICPA Board of Governors and is a 17-year member of the FICPA Educational Foundation Board of Trustees. Supporting accounting students and watching them succeed has been – and continues to be, a long-time passion for Ken.

Legislative Update

Justin Thames joined the FICPA on June 1, 2011 as the Manager of Governmental Affairs. As the Manager of Governmental Affairs, Justin is a registered lobbyist and is responsible for assisting the Director of Governmental Affairs in administration of the FICPA’s government relations program, which includes: monitoring legislative and regulatory activities which affect the accounting profession; and meeting with state legislators and advocates in public hearings on behalf of the profession. Justin also administers the activities and issues of the Florida CPA Political Action Committee, Inc. program, and is responsible for PAC fundraising, interviewing candidates running for the state legislature, and making recommendations to PAC Trustees on which candidates to support.

Prior to joining the staff of the FICPA in June of 2011, Justin worked at the League of Southeastern Credit Unions where he served as the Grassroots and Political Action Coordinator from 2008-2011. While at League of Southeastern Credit Unions, Justin coordinated, planned and facilitated legislative meetings and events between association members and Florida Congressional and State Legislators; Monitored and advocated financial institution legislation on the state and federal level; Created and executed PAC fundraising programs and activities; and created a grassroots advocacy network to recruit volunteers and encourage participation in the associations state-wide advocacy efforts.
