Awards Abound at Mega CPE Conference

The Mega CPE Conference was the perfect venue for recognizing those who have made a significant contribution to the accounting profession and to the FICPA.

At the Thursday morning keynote address, FICPA Past President Jose Valiente presented the Women to Watch Awards. Stephanie Martin with Lewis, Birch & Ricardo in Clearwater received the Emerging Leader Award and Karen Mosteller received the Experienced Leader Award. Mosteller is a partner at Markham Norton Mosteller Wright & Company in Fort Myers.

Before a full house at the Thursday luncheon, FICPA President/CEO Deborah Curry and Board Chair Scott Price honored Dr. Daniel Tschopp as the FICPA’s Outstanding Educator. Tschopp, an associate professor of accounting at St. Leo University, is enriching the learning environment for accounting students by infusing technology into the classroom.

On Friday morning, Chair Price welcomed Rep. David Richardson, CPA and presented him with a laminated copy of the cover of the May/June 2013 issue of Florida CPA Today. The cover featured Richardson and his fellow CPA legislators, Reps. Michael Bileca and Dan Raulerson.

After the FICPA’s Annual Meeting, Price recognized outgoing Board of Governors’ members Dan Hevia, Keith Jones, Mike Pender, Elgin Polo, Terry Seaton and Jose Valiente. Price also presented Outstanding Chair and Outstanding Committee awards in recognition of significant contributions made to the Institute this year.

At the FICPA Magical Evening! Dinner and fireworks show, Price honored FICPA Past President Richard Berkowitz of Berkowitz Pollack and Brant, LLP, with the Outstanding CPA in Public Service Award. Berkowitz was recognized for his exceptional support to students, education and an array of South Florida community programs. Price also presented Special Chair Service awards to four people who were instrumental in making 2012-13 a successful year for the Institute.

“I’m thankful for the guidance and support of these people for helping prepare me for my role as Chair,” Price said.

Past FICPA President Receives Top Leadership Florida Award

Mike Pender, a CPA for Cavanaugh & Co., LLP in Sarasota, received Leadership Florida’s 2013 Distinguished Member Award during the 31st annual conference at Walt Disney World® Resort before a crowd of 500 on June 28, 2013.

Leadership Florida strives to connect leaders throughout the state in sharing knowledge, experiences and opportunities. Pender was chosen for the award from the organization’s membership of approximately 1,800 leaders. As a part of his leadership experience, Pender served as the 2010-2011 President of the Florida Institute of CPAs.

Survey Results Reveal CPA Firms’ Chief Concerns
Succession planning and staffing joined new client acquisition and dealing with tax complexities as the top issues facing U.S. accounting firms, according to an AICPA survey released last week. The 2013 Private Companies Practice Section CPA Firm Top Issues Survey ranks areas of concern by firm size. It also found evidence that CPA firms are moving out of survival mode to focus on growth. How well do you know Microsoft Word?

Take this test and find out now!

  1. How do you temporarily hide page breaks, footers, headers, and excess white space in Word?
  2. How do you create a table of contents that updates itself as the document changes?
  3. How do you split the screen in Word?
  4. How do you create columns so your document reads like a newspaper?
  5. What is the shortcut for inserting a comment?


  1. In Print layout view, double-click the area between two pages, or in Word 2013 select Read Mode.
  2. Highlight each paragraph heading in the body and then from the References tab, select Add Text, Level 1. When you are done, position your cursor where you want the table of contents to appear and from the References ribbon select Table of Contents, and select the format you desire.
  3. Select Split from the View ribbon, then click and drag to split to the position desired.
  4. From the Page Layout ribbon select Columns, and set the number of columns you desire.
  5. ALT+CTRL+M.
