Annual Report Renewal Period Begins

The Florida Department of State (FDOS) renewal period for annual reports for businesses has started. Members may wish to remind their clients that they should receive a courtesy email from the state, reminding them to file the annual report. FDOS reminds you they no longer have the authority to waive the late fee of up to $400. If the client has changed registered agents or their email address in the past year and has not notified FDOS, the state will send the reminder to the registered agent’s last known email.

Tech Tip
How to Restrict Modifications to a Word 2013 Document

www.groovypost.com

Previous versions of Microsoft Word offered review features, and Word 2013 improves on them. When you’re working with someone on a document, you might want to prevent them from rewriting or changing what you’ve written. In most cases, using the Track Changes feature is sufficient. But sometimes you need to lock a document further. Here’s how:

In Word 2013, open the Review tab on the Ribbon. Then select Protect and the Restrict Editing button.

Formatting Restrictions in Word 2013
You may place two types of restrictions on document editing. The first involves styles and formatting, and only prevents changes to the way a document looks. The formatting restrictions window contains many options. To learn more about styles in Microsoft Word, check out this short and free Microsoft course.

Editing Restrictions in Word 2013
The second type of restrictions relates to editing. You may only want to allow comments on a document. Or, when creating corporate documents, you may only want to allow users to add to embedded fillable forms. There’s also an option to make a document Read Only, and no changes can be retained.

Once you’ve decided which restrictions to employ, click the “Yes, Start Enforcing Protection” button. You’ll be prompted to set up a password, or opt for User authentication. The password route is simple and the Restrict Editing sidebar will immediately change. Instead of options, you’ll see the permissions that are allowed and a “Stop Protection” button. This allows you to enter the password and unlock the document.

If you opt for User Authentication, you likely will see this error: "Your machine is not configured for Information Rights Management (IRM). If you need to use IRM sign in to Office or contact your administrator."

You can fix this by enabling IRM on the computer. Full documentation on that process is available on TechNet. Unfortunately, the instructions can be confusing.
