1040K Run/Walk Honors CPA Lewis Davis - 21st Annual Event Took Place on Tax Day
The FICPA Educational Foundation held its 21st Annual 1040K Run/Walk April 15, 2010, in Coconut Grove, in honor of the late CPA Lewis Davis. Florence Davis, wife of the late Lewis Davis, joined City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado and 1040K Board Chairman Ken Strauss to welcome a record number 842 runners and walkers to the event.
Participants, sponsors and onlookers gathered at Miami City Hall to visit and exchange tax-return stories with CPA-participants, who were dressed in their traditional suits, ties and running shorts.
Davis, who visited the race for the first time with her daughter, Shonda Perry, helped the 1040K Board of Directors give out $9,000 in scholarships to African-American accounting students in South Florida. She said she's proud to be associated with the annual Educational Foundation (EDF) event.
"Lewis would be very proud of what this race does for young people, year in and year out," Davis said. "This is a great way to celebrate my husband's life."
At the race, three African-American accounting students – Samuel Millings from Florida Atlantic University, Steven Sainvil from University of Miami and Farah Luis-Fayat from Florida International University – each received $3,000 scholarship checks to help them pursue their accounting degrees. Becker Professional Education also provided Steven Ball and Kate Glass from the University of Miami with $1,500 scholarships to help them pass the CPA exam in Florida. And the FICPA Educational Foundation contributed $2,000 to the James L. Wilcox Minority Summer Residency Program to attract more minority high-school students to the accounting profession.

About the Florida Institute of CPAs Educational Foundation, Inc.
The quality of tomorrow’s accountants is vitally important. When we recruit, we look for bright, well-educated individuals willing to dedicate themselves to the CPA profession. The financial burden of a college education has dramatically increased, especially with the necessary fifth year of education required before sitting for the CPA Exam.
The FICPA Educational Foundation works to ensure the integrity and success of the accounting profession in Florida. Founded in 1959 as the R. Warner Ring Educational Foundation, it has distributed more than $2 million dollars to colleges and accounting students across the state.
