Dan is the Director of Strategic Planning at Tanner, LLC, a Salt Lake City-based professional services firm. Dan is certified in Strategic Planning Facilitation and Leadership Development through the Business Learning Institute. He is a graduate of the 2010 AICPA Leadership Academy and in 2011-2012 served as the chair of the Young CPA Network Committee for the AICPA.

He has also been very active with the UACPA and in 2011 was recognized as the Outstanding CPA in Business and Management. He was recently selected to serve as Utah’s elected member of the AICPA Governing Council and was appointed by Governor Herbert to serve on the State Board of Education.

Thought Bridging: Change Your Thinking, Change Your Results (1.5 B)
Have you ever lost your cool in a high-pressure situation? Have you observed others make career limiting moves by responding emotionally to a challenging circumstance? Come learn some powerful tools to change your thinking and improve your career results. You'll learn:

  • How to develop a heightened level of self-awareness during tense situations
  • How your brain and body are “wired” and how you can use this knowledge to your advantage
  • How to develop new thought patterns and challenge flawed assumptions that may be keeping you from reaching your full potential

9:25–10:40 a.m.
Strengths in Teams:  How to Manage Team Performance by Leveraging the Unique Strengths of Each Member (1.5 B)
It's in our nature to associate with others that are just like us.  The trouble is that teams tend to perform better when composed of members that have different, but complementary strengths.  In this session you'll learn how to:

  • Build a team on the foundation of shared values
  • Put together high-performing teams
  • Leverage the unique strengths of each team member

Strategic Thinking:  It's never Just About Finding the Right Answer (1.5 B)
You know it's just what a client or your department needs to move forward.  The problem is, it feels like you're the only one who can see it.  How do you make your thinking visible in a way that draws others into productive conversations about which direction to move? This session will provide you with tools to help you challenge your thinking and draw out the best thinking of other members of your team.

Giving & Receiving Feedback:  A Core Leadership Competency (1.5 B)
How do you feel right before you walk into an annual performance appraisal? There's a good chance that the person sitting across the desk from you in that meeting is just as nervous and perhaps truly terrified.  This session builds on concepts from the Thought Bridging workshop and provides participants with tools for tackling feedback conversations and opening up dialogue, both up and down the organizational chain of command.

Development Planning:  Leveraging Your Strengths in Charting a Course for Your Career (1 B)
We've all made New Year's resolutions and set goals.  The odds are not on our side.  Research shows that most of those resolutions fizzle after just a few days or weeks.  This session will give you tools to stack the odds in your favor. You'll learn how to:

  • Identify and leverage your core strengths in creating a development plan customized to you.
  • Manage your energy level to achieve your development objectives more quickly and with less pain.
  • Incorporate strategies into your development plan that address personal, social, and structural factors that may be getting in the way of needed changes.

3:15–5:00 p.m.
Community Service Project
Attendees will participate in service project where they will assemble care packages and write notes of encouragement to send to deployed soldiers.
