The Florida Institute of CPAs' strength is in its members and their sense of contribution and volunteerism. The FICPA needs you. There are several areas you can give back to your profession.

  • Answer questions from other CPAs through listservs and online communities
  • Serve on a Sections steering committee
  • Serve on one of the FICPAs' many member committees
  • Assist during a CPE course
  • Offer your expertise during peer reviews
  • Write a technical article for Florida CPA Today
  • Talk to students about our profession
  • Provide guidance to students and adults on personal finance

Below are additional opportunities to volunteer within your community.

Teach Floridians about Financial Literacy

Thousands of Florida families are stressed about financial decisions, struggling to prepare for retirement, and creating high-interest credit card debt. The FICPA expanded its financial literacy programs by joining the American Institute of CPAs national 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy initiative, which equips CPAs to improve the financial understanding of Americans in every life stage.

  • Volunteer for Financial Fitness Friday and help Floridians make sound financial choices. Through Financial Fitness Friday, an outreach event of 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy initiative, CPA volunteers from across the state answer basic financial questions and provide a financial-fitness checkup for Floridians.
  • Become an FICPA Financial Literacy Speaker and provide financial-literacy presentations for groups of all ages around the state.

Talk to Students about Your Profession

Accounting for Success, an innovative program managed by the FICPA Accounting Careers Committee, is designed to educate high school students and their teachers about the expansive opportunities available in the CPA profession.

The program works by assigning an FICPA member to each of Florida's more than 600 high schools. High School Speakers (HSSs) build relationships with their schools and open lines of communication with key faculty in:

  • Mathematics
  • Business education
  • Guidance
  • Faculty advisers of related clubs and organizations

HSSs make themselves available as guest speakers for classroom presentations, career days, career fairs and other career-related events. Volunteers also can access a resource toolkit.

In addition to career-based programs, many CPAs are making financial literacy presentations and providing students much needed basic money-management skills. This approach allows CPAs to share information one-on-one or in small groups about their education and experience, offer insight about why they chose an accounting career, and how that has influenced their lives.
