Minority Summer Residency Program

FICPA’s 9th Annual Minority Summer Residency Program

The Minority Summer Residency Program is a five-day, four-night college residency program for students interested in business with an emphasis on accounting. The program is planned and conducted by the FICPA’s Accounting Careers & Education Committee with the assistance of the School of Accountancy, University of South Florida.

Purpose
The program is designed to increase awareness of accounting as a profession and the variety of career opportunities within the profession. The target audience is 30-35 minority high school students throughout the state of Florida. The program goals are to:

  • Increase awareness of the accounting and business professions as a career;
  • Learn accounting and business concepts through structured activities;
  • Increase skills and knowledge in personal finance; and,
  • Familiarize students with the college ‘living’ experience.

Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, students must be entering the 12th grade in Fall 2008; be classified as a minority; and be interested in exploring the field of business with an emphasis on accounting. Though not a requirement, we suggest students have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Nomination Form
Teachers, guidance, and administrators may submit more than one qualified minority student from your school. Click on the link to download a nomination form.  Forms are also being mailed to high school principals.

Registration Fee/Costs
The student registration fee for the program is $75 (equal to $15 per day). Students who qualify for a free or reduced lunch will receive a full scholarship. The registration fee is refundable to students who cancel and notify the FICPA at least 10 calendar days before the start of the program, otherwise the fee is forfeited. Information on the registration fee and other program details will be provided to selected students in May.

Students must provide their own transportation to and from Tampa. Housing, meals, and other program-related expenses during their stay are covered by the FICPA.

  • Program aimed at high school minority students interested in business and accounting
  • Students selected from high schools throughout Florida
  • Specially-designed curriculum teaches students about business, communication, college, personal finance, and the CPA profession
  • Field trips designed to show typical work environments and how accounting systems are applied
  • On-site residency and social activities to expand students knowledge of college lif
